We are in the process of Hiring 3 custodians and an HVAC technician. It has been an interesting ride, as we have struggled to get applicants that can pass a simple drug test, CORI check Where are you advertising? Are you seeing the same, either people with no experience or people that can not get through the hiring process. We have posted on Indeed, Facebook and local paper. Any ideas would be appreciated.

On another note: what are you paying for these positions?

I posted and received an application for what turned out to be a great custodial employee through Mass Municipal Association. Here in Acton we are having the same problems!
We are currently in AFSCME union negotiations for their contract that expired 6/30/24. Rates under the expired contract:
    Custodians are categorized as “Labor” A-2 – Step Levels 1 thru 9, $49,402 – 62,568.

Good luck with the HVAC Technician! HVAC Maintenance & Repairs are contracted out.

Sometimes you just have to think out of the box.
When I was working in Newton I hired two Uber drivers and turned them into custodians. The first time it was totally by accident. I was riding to Fenway for a game and noticed a clean car, good conversation and someone eager to work indpendently. He overheard my phone call with an evenng custodian and asked if I was hiring. I told him the ride was his interview and if he showed up at my office on Monday he had the job.

I believe he is still working there (10yrs).

I guess working in a quiet school building from 3pm – 11pm, getting paid OK and benifits is better than driving a bunch of drunks around all night!

    Good Luck
