Position Purpose/Function:
Works independently under the direction of the Director of Facilities. Plans, organizes, and insures all applicable codes pertaining to life, safety and health are performed. Designs and assists in the design of a full scale environmental health and safety practice to provide for the safety of the students, staff, administration, and faculty of Waltham Public Schools and the City of Waltham environment. Performs the function of the AHERA coordinator. Responsible for securing contracts to meet applicable codes and provide quality assurance and record keeping. Insures responsive, timely and thorough responses to the needs of the School Department community. Provides cooperation and loyalty to higher authorities, peers and coworkers. Provides emphasis of cooperation and liaison with the School Department as a service organization. Acts as School Department liaison for environmental and safety committees. Must constantly strive to satisfy students, staff and administration regarding environmental issues.Supervision Received:
Works under the general direction and guidance of the Director of Facilities. Incumbent is expected to work independently and exercise initiative in anticipating compliance and safety issues that will confront the School Department.Job Environment:
Work is performed both inside and outside and the incumbent may be subjected to loud noise and exposure to extremes of heat and cold temperatures and inclement weather. Incumbent is required to traverse uneven terrain, may be required to bend or stoop and is subject to one or more hazards such as those associated with working near heavy equipment, mechanical and electrical systems. Work environment will be moderately noisy and at times very loud due to students and staff traveling through corridors, as well as work areas such as boiler rooms.Responsibilities & Duties:
When emergency situations occur the incumbent will need to respond; either in person or instruct staff to respond. If staff needs assistance in resolving emergency matters the Environmental & Compliance Officer will assist or guide verbally.Perform required tasks to implement and insure the following requirements are performed as per standard & code. Develop and complete logs on a regular basis & file.

- Building Certificates acquired and Building Compliance Issues resolved

- Radon Testing & Resolution
- Water Testing Logs
- Chemical/Science Lab Waste Tank Cleaning
- Science Lab Emergency Shower Testing
- Ansul System Testing
- Grease Trap Maintenance
- Bleacher Seating & Gym Equipment Inspections
- Fire Drill Evacuations
- Other similar duties assigned as needed
Attend Seminars to enhance ability and knowledge
Attend City Environmental Committees
Oversees School Environmental Management System
Attend School Safety Committee Meetings
Responsibilities & Duties: (continued)
Monitors computerized maintenance and repair work orders that are directly related to environmental or compliance issues. Ensures completion of said maintenance and repairs tasks in accordance with established standards. May assist maintenance staff on specific tasks to facilitate their training.
Ensures compliance with all applicable safety regulations, building codes and safety requirements.
Tests or arranges for testing, for potentially hazardous situations or the presence of hazards.
Understand and demonstrate the ability to gather data, develop environmental projects, write specifications, collect proposals, and direct projects to successful and timely completion.
Knowledge of the procedures involved in conducting building inspections, writing management plans, and implementing an Environmental Operations and Maintenance plan.Required to be on emergency call 24 hours a day.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
Demonstrates effectiveness of communication between the Facilities Department and various Department Head, Principals and teachers or similar environment. Supervisory skills, able to negotiate and secure the cooperation of the maintenance staff.
Massachusetts Drivers License required.
AHERA certification within the state of Massachusetts. (May obtain within the first six months of employment)
Technical skills related to environmental issues, including an understanding of the application of environmental procedures.
Strong communications skills for clear, concise, and effective interaction with all concerned parties related to environmental projects or issues. Contact will include, but not be limited to, state and federal agencies and their personnel, contractors, environmental testing firms, and all levels of school department and city-wide personnel.
Ability to work effectively in a busy environment.
Physical & Mental Requirements:
The work is mutually mental and physical requiring an intellectual nature.
While performing the functions of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear for extended periods. Frequently required use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reaches with hands and arms, crawls and climbs. Specific vision abilities required include close and medium distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Incumbent must be able to hear normal sounds, distinguish sound as voice and communicate through human speech. The incumbent is required to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. This position requires the ability to operate a keyboard and calculator at efficient speed.Salary: Commensurate with Experience and Skills
